Focus on Retention at CrossFit 858

“There are no traffic jams along the extra mile.” – Roger Staubach

If you have been at CrossFit 858 for the past few months or more, it’s no secret on of my focuses has been to grow new memberships within the changing CrossFit market.  We’ve tried to really differentiate ourselves to potential new CrossFit athletes shopping around for their first or new box and it’s easy to tell that we have grown.

While it’s important to grow new business, an even BIGGER priority of mine is retention of the athletes.  I’ve learned from past experiences that once athletes are proficient, you can’t leave them to be in charge of their own progress.  This isn’t rocket science.  What keeps people coming back?  In a word: value.  “Value” is defined by the customer experience.  What is it exactly that the athlete gets out of their membership?  On the surface, it may be the features: class times, class types, equipment etc.  But really what’s important in determining value is whether or not the athlete’s own goals and needs are being met, and how it’s being accomplished.  THAT is what defines “Value” at our gym.

With that said, let’s take a look at a few things that we have in place and are launching to create that value, go that extra mile, and really focus on making sure you keep coming back.

1.)  FREE 1 on 1 coaching with me:

  • We originally launched this back in November and I’ve met with upwards of 20 athletes already.  We’ve discussed ANYTHING the athlete wants to discuss, which ranges from working on lifts, nutrition plans, competition specific plans, even athlete specific programming.  This is all FREE and open to athletes of ALL tenures!! CLICK HERE to see more details and learn how to sign up!  The purpose of this is to help you reach your individual goals!

2.) Additional coaches for larger classes:

  • In the past, I’ve kept a close eye on class sizes as people are being checked in.  If the class is larger, then I myself would stay and run as an “assistant” to the coach on duty.  If I was the main coach, I’d more or less draft one of the coaches around and make them stay to assist me if I had a large class.  With an extra coach for large classes, it ensures all athletes will get the amount of coaching they need to continue developing.  Moving forward, I’m going to be a bit more systematic, but I’ll need YOUR HELP.
  • Action requested:  Please start to reserve your classes a day ahead of time in Mindbody.  I’ll be monitoring the sign ups each night and assigning an assistant coach for classes that are over a certain number (depending on the WOD etc).  If there’s a big number, I’ll assist or assign someone to assist.  If you don’t reserve your classes, I won’t see the need for this.

3.) CrossFit 858 FREE Veteran’s Clinic and Survey:

  • For the first few years of CrossFit, the secret to success is simple:  Show up, give 100% effort, and follow the program (if you have selected a good box with good programming).   The results and PRs should follow.  However, after a few years most athletes look for “fine tuning” of certain aspects of their repertoire or want to learn more advanced skills.   This survey and FREE clinic are for you.
  • Action requested: IF you have been a member of CrossFit 858 for 1.5 years or more, this is for you.  On Saturday April 11th from 1pm-3pm, we will be holding a special clinic for CrossFit 858 veterans. The topic will be determined by YOU, via THIS SURVEY.  There are some other questions as well, which will help me get a better pulse to what is going well and what needs to improve for the experienced veterans.

Thank you ahead of time for your efforts, and helping us go that extra mile.
