Memorial Day Murph 2015

Memorial Day Murph 2015

Murphy

This Memorial Day, Monday May 25 2015, we will be honoring Lt. Michael P. Murphy, US Navy.

Lieutenant Murphy, the leader of a Navy SEAL squad, was killed during a fierce battle against the Taliban on a remote mountainside in the Kongeral Valley of Afghanistan on 28 June 2005. The first to receive the nation s highest military honor for service in Afghanistan, Lieutenant Murphy was also the first naval officer to earn the medal since the Vietnam War. Honored for his courage and leadership in the face of certain death, he is now the subject of Naval Special Warfare courses on leadership, and a guided-missile destroyer, naval base, school, post office, ball park, and hospital emergency room have all been named in his honor. SEAL of Honor tells the story of Lieutenant Murphy s life and how he came to be the man that Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of the mission, called the best officer I ever knew, an iron-souled warrior of colossal, almost unbelievable courage in the face of the enemy. In attempting to answer why Lieutenant Murphy readily sacrificed his life for his comrades, the author traces the SEAL s journey from a seemingly ordinary life on New York s Long Island to those extraordinary last moments half a world away. Lieutenant Murphy s story has captured the nations attention, making him one of the most celebrated Medal of Honor recipients since World War II.

This is a CrossFit time honored tradition to honor “Murph” every Memorial Day among most affiliates worldwide.

The workout is as follows from CrossFit.com:

“Murph”

For time:
1 mile Run
100 Pull-ups
200 Push-ups
300 Squats
1 mile Run

“In memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.

This workout was one of Mike’s favorites and he’d named it “Body Armor”. From here on it will be referred to as “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Start and finish with a mile run. If you’ve got a twenty pound vest or body armor, wear it.”

You may scale “Murph” as needed with 75 reps or 50 reps, or even the run.   The honor comes from participation, not necessarily performing the WOD as Rx’d.

We will be running two heats one at 9:00am and another at 10:30am.

A pot luck cookout will follow at 12pm.  Please bring paleo or non paleo dishes to share.  We’ll have the grill fired up too.

We will also have active duty military members of CrossFit 858 and friends of CrossFit 858 participating.  Please join us on this special day.
