Todd Mersch

Todd has been one of the most consistent members since the OG days and you can almost always catch him at the 6am class. Even more so, he shows community spirit. Whenever we have a new member/drop-in/free week trial, Todd is the first person to introduce himself. When someone is still working out when the rest are finished, Todd is there cheering them on. We love having Todd as a part of our community – thank you for all you do!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Seven years

What got you hooked on CrossFit?

Looking at a WOD and thinking there was no way I could do it, whether it was the sheer volume or the movements that seemed way too complex – then somehow struggling through. (real answer)

The inappropriate touching at 6 am (half joking answer)

What is your favorite movement?

Clean

Do you have any current goals you are trying to attain?

I’d say casually been trying to get leaner and faster – mainly by more cardio / volume than any special diet. But generally show up to fight aging and hang out with people I enjoy being around.

Do you have any advice for someone starting out in CrossFit?

First, don’t listen to advice from old guys who still pull early when they clean. Now that’s out of the way – focus on form with effort (i.e. efficiency) first as it’s a lot harder than gaining strength and find some lifting partners for the strength WOD its way more fun than lifting alone.

Fun Fact:

I had a lead role in musicals from 6th through 12th grade

Alanna D’Alessandro

Ever since Alanna joined, she’s been one of our most consistent members – which is really saying something when they consistently show up to our earliest class at 5:15am. We are in awe of her dedication despite juggling law school and work, yet she STILL comes to the early AM class (even if she didn’t get a full night’s sleep). Not only does she show up, but she even fits in extra work on the side after class. We see your hard work, Alanna!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

Two years

What got you hooked on CrossFit?

When I moved to San Diego, I decided to try CrossFit because I needed more structure in my fitness routine. CrossFit 858 not only gave me exactly what I needed with the fun, challenging, and effective programing, but it has also given me a sense of belonging. My favorite part of the day is working out with the early morning crew, challenging and encouraging each other through the WOD. Making small progressions, in class and on my own time, has kept me motivated to work harder.

What is your favorite movement?

Right now my favorite movement is squat cleans; I’m embracing what I need to work on.

Do you have any current goals you are trying to attain?

I would really like to get double unders and pull-ups by the end of the year.

Do you have any advice for someone starting out in CrossFit?

Embrace the challenges and set small goals, there’s always going to be room for improvement!

Understanding the philosophy behind CrossFit has really changed my approach. I recently started listening to a Podcast called “Chasing Excellence” which I would recommend for CrossFitters at any level.

Fun Fact:

I’ve been skydiving in Australia, Fiji, and Colorado!
